Burnout often sneaks in, disguised as “a busy season” or “a rough patch.” Before you know it, you're emotionally drained, mentally foggy, and physically exhausted. I know, because I’ve been there.
As a former Clinical Director and therapist who once prided herself on being able to do it all, I ignored the warning signs, until my body and spirit forced me to stop. If you’re reading this and wondering, “Is this burnout?” — you’re not alone, and there is a way forward.
What Is Burnout, Really?
Burnout is a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion, usually caused by prolonged stress. It’s more than just being tired or overworked , it is a deep, lingering depletion that makes it hard to feel motivated, present, or even hopeful.
Burnout often affects high-achieving, caring individuals the most, people who give a lot but may not realize when they’ve gone beyond their own capacity.
3 Signs You Might Be Experiencing Burnout
You Wake Up Already Exhausted. No matter how much sleep you get, you wake up feeling like you’ve already run a marathon. You dread your day, even if nothing “bad” is scheduled.
You Feel Detached or Emotionally Numb You might still be functioning, but you're on autopilot. Work, relationships, and even hobbies feel dull or pointless. You may feel more irritable, anxious, or even cynical.
You’re Losing Passion for the Things You Once Loved What once inspired you now feels like a burden. Whether it’s your career, creative pursuits, or social life, burnout strips away your connection to joy.
What You Can Do Right Now
You don’t need a major life overhaul (yet). Here are three short-term steps to begin reclaiming your energy:
Pause and Check In Take 10 minutes a day, yes, just 10, to sit quietly and ask yourself, How am I really doing? Name what you're feeling without judgment.
Set Micro-Boundaries Burnout thrives in boundary-less environments. Start small: say no to one thing this week that doesn’t serve you. Create space for your own needs.
Prioritize True Rest, Not Just Sleep Rest isn’t just sleep, it's emotional, mental, and spiritual too. Schedule a guilt-free break, even if it’s just a walk without your phone or a quiet moment with your favorite music.
